Distance Education at Secondary Level in India: The National Open School
This book is an in-depth study of the National Open School (NOS) in India. NOS is India's most comprehensive distance education programme at the secondary level, and enrols students from all over the country. Prior to examining the NOS programme itself, the author presents the general characteristics of the Indian education system as a whole, including its historical background. It is only since independence that India has been able to move away from an elitist education system towards a more equitable one. However despite considerable progress, many children remain out of school, particularly at the secondary level, and there are still problems of quality and relevance to the world of work, as well as of how to reach out to disadvantaged groups.
